Ace of Spades

Date

2024

Location

Toronto

16 x 24 inches, Acrylic and Paint Markers on Canvas

This piece is dedicated to my best friend Jasmin Bennett. This piece is meant to depict Asexuality in a overtly sexualized society. The decision to portray it in a green blue and white colour pallette is meant to tie into how on earth we are expected to carry out biological displays of intimacy and how that expectation weighs on the likes of the ace community. Asexual people are treated as if their is something wrong with not wanting to display intimacy through having sex. It is from my understanding that their love for people is shown in a multitude of different ways which allign with their belief systems, and heart of hearts. Ace people to me, much like an ace of spades in poker, are of high value and importance to any other community in the LGBTQ2S+ community. We must honour and respect their displacement in a overtly sexual world as they understand acutely what it is like to be cast aside and ostracized for just being themselves. In my practice I have made alot of works dedicated to human sexuality and felt that creating one on the lack of sexual desire felt fitting to completing my series of paintings on Sex.
